The English Premier League, the country’s top football division, has said the Federation Against Copyright Theft’s successful conviction against a website that had been illegally streaming live games is a “significant win” in its ongoing battle against piracy and Intellectual Property theft.
The individual responsible received a two-year custodial sentence for fraud, the first time a prison term has been handed down to someone illegally exploiting the Premier League’s rights.
The league’s legal department worked with the federation from January 2012 to secure the prosecution against the site, which had more than 10,000 subscribers each paying £29.99 (€35.35/$48) per month to access an illegal stream of UK pay-television broadcaster BSkyB’s coverage of Premier League matches.
