Pro League addresses unease over rights tender

The Pro League, the top division of football in Belgium, has maintained the tender process for its broadcast rights is on schedule amid reports of delays.

The league in February appointed the MP & Silva agency as its worldwide media adviser in a six-year deal, from 2014-15 to 2019-20.

Pay-television broadcasters Telenet and Belgacom both have rights for the league in the current three-year cycle, from 2011-12 to 2013-14, and the Pro League has moved to address unease that a tender has yet to be issued for the next window.

“We still have…some issues (with the) Belgian Competition Authority and are now in the final phase of writing the tender,” Pro League chairman Michel Dupont said, according to the Sport.be website. “We are definitely on track in terms of timing. But I understand the nervousness. Our content is of great importance for Belgian media companies. Soon we will be able to inform everyone.”

MP & Silva added in a statement: “A detailed knowledge of the market is essential for us. Out of respect for all media companies, we are doing what is necessary to get to know the market well.”
