The Pyeongchang Organising Committee for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic winter Games (POCOG) has agreed a strategic partnership with Chinese social media platform Weibo.
As part of the agreement, Weibo users will receive Games-related news through POCOG’s official account on the platform, @2018年平昌冬季奥运会 (2018 Pyeongchang winter Olympic Games).
Weibo’s live-streaming platform will also be used to drive interest in and understanding of the Games across China. Other features of the partnership will include video clips and an athlete popularity ranking.
Weibo is the only Chinese social media platform that will work with the Games’ organising committee. Weibo signed a similar partnership with the 2016 summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and said the agreement with Pyeongchang 2018 is designed to drive interest in winter sports ahead of Beijing’s staging of the 2022 Games.
The Pyeongchang Olympics will run from February 9-25, with the Paralympics to follow from March 9-18.
