South African public-service broadcaster the SABC has agreed a new domestic rights deal with Athletics South Africa, the sport’s governing body in the country.
The deal will start immediately and run for one year with the option of extending the agreement by one year.
The SABC will provide coverage of the annual Comrades Marathon, Two Oceans Marathon and Soweto Marathon road races, as well as domestic track and field events.
Financial details have not been disclosed.
“This agreement comes at a very critical time for us,” the governing body’s president, James Evans, said. “It is no secret that we are financially challenged as a sporting federation. The SABC’s commitment is a new lease for us to continue to stage world-class events with the country’s biggest broadcaster.”
