German pay-television broadcaster Sky Deutschland has agreed a multi-year extension to its rights deal for UK golf major The Open Championship.
Sky Deutschland has secured rights in Germany and Austria across television, internet, IPTV and mobile platforms.
Burkhard Weber, senior vice-president of live sports for Sky Deutschland, said: “Our close collaboration with Sky UK offers us in the future even more editorial content – a real added value for our customers in Germany and Austria.”
Sky will take over the UK’s live coverage from this year’s Open, which takes place at Royal Troon in Scotland from July 14-17.
Sky had initially struck a deal with the R&A, which operates the Open, to assume live rights from 2017. However, the R&A last September accepted a proposal from public-service broadcaster the BBC to end its obligations a year early. Sky will hold the rights until 2021.
