Sky Italia picks up Gazzetta TV’s football rights

Italian pay-television broadcaster Sky Italia has agreed a deal to acquire a package of football rights previously held by digital terrestrial sports television channel Gazzetta TV, according to Milano Finanza.

The Italian newspaper said Sky will now broadcast the English Championship and League Cup club football competitions, along with South American qualifiers for the 2018 Fifa World Cup national team tournament.

English football's second tier returned to Italian television for the first time in four years with Gazzetta TV's deal for the 2015-16 Championship and League Cup.

But the channel, which is owned by Italian media group RCS, ceased broadcasting on January 5 amid financial difficulties.
