Pay-television broadcaster Sky New Zealand is to increase the price of its sports package due to increases in rights fees for sports events and properties.
From June 15, the Sky Sport package will go up to NZ$28.29 (€18.60/US$21.24) per month, an increase of NZ$1.61 on the current price.
The broadcaster’s Sky Basic package will also increase by NZ$1.15 to NZ$49.22 per month.
Sky customers are required to subscribe to Sky Basic, with the option of adding the Sky Sport package on top. For households that subscribe to both the Sky Basic and Sky Sport packages, the price changes will represent an increase of 3.7 per cent in monthly costs.
Sky spokesperson Kirsty Way told the New Zealand Herald newspaper: “The cost of content in today's very competitive market is increasing and costing us a lot more to purchase. There's a lot of other sport on there and quite simply the price of those sporting codes and events is increasing.”
Sky broadcasts various sport, including coverage of the New Zealand cricket and the country's rugby union team.
