Sky NZ to consider ‘season tickets’

Sky New Zealand is considering offering “season tickets” that would allow viewers to watch individual sports or competitions online without purchasing a full subscription with the pay-television broadcaster.

Sky spokeswoman Kirsty Way told the Stuff.co.nz news website that further details would be provided early next year if the broadcaster decides to move forward with the plan.

Way did not reveal which sports might be offered as part of the season ticket and also did not confirm whether the offer might be bundled with Sky’s standalone subscription entertainment television service, which is due to launch later this year.

Way said that the timing of Sky’s announcement had nothing to do with the launch of an online petition by online service provider Orcon to call on New Zealand Rugby to make games featuring the All Blacks national rugby union team available online without the need for a Sky subscription.

She added that Sky was responding to customer demand, rather than the petition, and added that technological developments had made streaming of live sports coverage more viable.
