Real Madrid’s victory over Barcelona on Wednesday, August 29 was the most-watched Supercopa game in Spanish television history, according to research company Kantar Media.
The second leg of the two-legged Supercopa was broadcast by public-service broadcaster TVE and by regional network TV3 in Barcelona’s home market of Catalunya, drawing a combined audience of 10.4 million viewers across Spain.
Kantar said that 9.1 million viewers watched the game on TVE, giving the broadcaster a 53.4-per-cent national audience share, while TV3’s coverage drew 1.3 million viewers for a 46.4-per-cent share in Catalunya.
The Supercopa involves the previous season’s winners of the Spanish Liga and Copa del Rey knockout competition. Real Madrid won the second leg 2-1 in the Santiago Bernabéu to claim the cup on the away goals rule after the tie finished 4-4 on aggregate.
