The Scottish Professional Football League has agreed a deal to restructure its broadcast contracts for the 2014-15 season, taking into account the presence of three of the country’s biggest clubs in the second tier Championship division.
A five-year deal for Scottish football's television rights was agreed in 2012 shortly after Rangers went into liquidation. However, the relegation of Edinburgh clubs Hearts and Hibernian from the top-tier Premiership to join the Glasgow giant in the Championship this season resulted in more talks this summer.
Pay-television broadcasters Sky Sports and BT Sport will now broadcast 70 live SPFL matches this season, including at least 15 Rangers games from the Championship and the four derby games between Hearts and Hibernian.
BBC Alba, the Gaelic-language channel operated by UK public-service broadcaster the BBC, will also add to its existing coverage by televising 16 live games across the SPFL’s three divisions. BBC Alba has previously mainly broadcast pre-recorded games from the Premiership, plus the occasional live match.
