Singapore pay-television broadcaster Starhub has announced its pay-per-view pricing package for the Uefa Euro 2012, the first sports rights property to be affected by the country’s cross-carriage regulation.
The dedicated pay-per-view channel is priced at S$58.85 (€35/$47) if ordered before May 1, and S$69.55 thereafter, including goods and services tax. The channel is available to purchase from March 27 and will offer live all 31 tournament matches across Starhub’s pay-television, online and mobile platforms.
The channel will also be made available on rival telco Singtel’s platform due to the cross-carriage regulation. Starhub will pay Singtel a one-time set-up cost and a fee for carriage of the channel.
Customers do not need to subscribe to the basic or sports channel packages on either pay-television broadcaster to order the Euro 2012 pay-per-view package. All of the subscriber fees will go to Starhub.
Starhub acquired the exclusive rights to the tournament from the Sportfive agency in September last year, as reported exclusively in TV Sports Markets.
The cross-carriage regulation, which was passed by the Singapore government’s Media Development Authority in March 2010, lays down that Singtel and Starhub, the two main pay-television operators in the country, must share content acquired on an exclusive basis. The regulation has driven down sports rights values in Singapore. The Media Development Authority introduced forced content-sharing to counter rising costs for both operators and subscribers.
