Pan-African pay-television broadcaster SuperSport has signed a “multi-year” rights extension to its World Wrestling Entertainment deal which will include the launch of a dedicated channel for the rights-holder’s content.
The deal will cover 50 territories across sub-Saharan Africa and has been extended two years before SuperSport’s current rights deal was due to expire.
The previous agreement was signed in 2017 and brought WWE content to the Multichoice-owned satellite platform DStv via SuperSport’s dedicated sports channels.
SuperSport had launched a ‘pop-up’ channel for WWE content on August 1 which was scheduled to close on December 31. This will now be expanded and turned into the new permanent DStv channel. SuperSport will now launch the WWE-focused channel on on January 1, 2020.
The new channel will broadcast WWE’s Raw, SmackDown and NXT programmes each week as well as monthly pay-per-view events.
