Sweden’s TV4 to launch pay-television sports channel after renewing Serie A rights

Swedish commercial and basic-tier broadcaster TV4 will launch a pay-television sports channel, TV4 Sports Xtra, on May 4.

The channel’s content will include football from the Italian Serie A. TV4 has renewed its rights for the league for three seasons, from 2012-13 to 2014-15.

The channel’s football content will also include other European football leagues, the final of this season’s Uefa Europa League tournament, the final of the Spanish Copa del Rey, five matches from Euro 2012 including the final, and the Brazilian Campeonato Série A.

Other content will include 30 matches from this year’s International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships and handball.

“TV4 Sports Xtra is the channel for all sports-loving Swedish television viewers, who will now be able to see even more top matches from international football leagues and major championships in high definition,” said TV4 Group sports director Hans Pekkari.

TV4 Sports Xtra will be sold as a standalone channel on pay-television platforms, costing SEK30 (€3.40/$4.50) to SEK50 per month, depending on the platform.
