Spanish-language sports broadcaster Telemundo Deportes has secured exclusive rights in the United States to the home games of Liga MX giants CD Guadalajara (Chivas).
The multiyear agreement with NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises includes rights to all Chivas home games in Spanish and English across all Telemundo platforms. In addition, Telemundo Deportes will also carry rights to its women’s team Chivas Femenil and youth team Cantera Rojiblanca.
The deal will start with the 2020 Liga MX Apertura tournament, which is set to kick off later this month.
To supplement the matchday coverage, Telemundo Deportes and Chivas will create additional multimedia content, programming, and promotional opportunities to enhance the team’s brand experience across NBC properties, including new streaming service Peacock, which has already made live sports an important differentiator from rival over-the-top platforms such as Hulu, Netflix, and Disney+.
“We are thrilled to become the new home of Chivas de Guadalajara in the US,” said Telemundo Deportes president Ray Warren. “As one of Mexico’s most historic, popular and successful teams, the acquisition of these rights aligns perfectly with NBCUniversal and Telemundo Deportes’ approach to partner with owners of the biggest and best properties in sports.
“We look forward to working with the entire Chivas de Guadalajara organization to take its brand to unprecedented heights and scale, while growing its passionate fan base across the US and other countries,” Warren said.
The length and terms of the partnership were not disclosed.
