The University of Miami has claimed a first for US college sport by developing a virtual reality channel for fans of its athletics teams.
The university has partnered with virtual reality sports training and fan experience company EON Sports VR for the venture.
Through EON Sports’ proprietary technology, the University of Miami will be able to upload content to its customised VR channel to provide fans of the Hurricanes sports teams with an immersive behind-the-scenes experience in a customised virtual reality environment.
To access the VR channel, fans will need to purchase a UM-branded VR headset, retailing at $29.95 (€27). Content streamed to the channel will include practice footage, scrimmages, huddles and interviews.
The University of Miami is aiming to debut the new technology to fans in early October providing content from both their men’s and women’s teams.
Brendan Reilly, chief executive and founder of EON Sports VR, said: “Professional and student athletes have used our technology to improve their performance on the field and we are excited to bring that same mindset to fans.”
