Virgin Media extends carriage deal for Sky Sports channels

UK cable-television broadcaster Virgin Media has renewed a deal to carry pay-television broadcaster BSkyB’s Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 channels beyond this summer, according to UK newspaper the Guardian.

The length of the deal was not disclosed, but Virgin Media chief executive Neil Berkett said: “We have surety through 2013. I’m comfortable with where we are in terms of continuity and surety of supply.”

The newspaper said that the previous carriage deal between Virgin Media and Sky for the sports channels was negotiated in 2010 and was due to expire this summer.

The report added that Virgin Media is currently Sky’s biggest wholesale customer, providing about 700,000 Sky Sports subscriptions.
