Vodafone seeks to attract 4G customers with Sky Sports deal

UK telecommunications company Vodafone has agreed a sports content deal with pay-television broadcaster BSkyB to support the launch of its 4G mobile broadband service, according to The Telegraph newspaper.

Vodafone is bidding to stand out in the market through its new content bundles, which will be available from August 12.

Subscribers to 4G will be offered either free mobile access to Sky Sports Mobile TV or the Spotify Premium music streaming service, for six months. After the introductory period each will cost an extra £4.99 (€5.78/$7.54) per month.

Vodafone’s UK chief executive Guy Laurence said the Sky deal would run for at least the next two football seasons, but declined to provide further details of the partnership. Vodafone is hoping that access to Sky’s Premier League content will encourage consumers to upgrade to 4G.

Vodafone will introduce its 4G service in London on August 29 before rolling it out to 12 other cities by the end of the year.
