Al Jazeera is in advanced talks to acquire Spanish agency Mediapro in a move that would grant the Qatari pay-television operator a powerful position in the Spanish television market, according to El Economista.
The deal would see Al Jazeera gain control of the lucrative Spanish football league rights held by Barcelona-based Mediapro, as well as the agency’s pay-television channel Gol T.
Mediapro holds domestic and international rights for 10 Spanish Liga football clubs in deals running from 2012-13 to 2014-15.
Mediapro already has close ties with Al Jazeera. The broadcaster has acquired Spanish Liga rights from the agency in a number of markets around the world.
