Argentinian government doubles investment in football rights

‘Futbol para todos’ is a scheme whereby the government, which acquired the broadcasting rights to the first and second division at the start of the 2009-10 season, broadcasts coverage on free-to-air television via state broadcaster Canal 7.

The additional investment will cover an increase in the use of digital technology, the launch and financing of an official football association television channel, AFA TV, and the broadcasting of some top-flight games in HD from August.

The government has secured some additional funds as Francisco Casal, the owner of the Uruguayan Tenfield Agency, which holds a controlling stake in football channel Gol TV, has become a member of the scheme. Gol TV will launch on digital-terrestrial television in Argentina this year and show a simulcast with Canal 7 and other regional free-to-air channels for certain Primera Division matches.

The government has a 10-year broadcasting rights agreement with the AFA, from 2009-10 to 2018-19, worth ARS$600 million per year.
