Aulas wants more domestic income for European teams

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has said that French Ligue 1 football clubs that compete in European tournaments should be awarded a greater split of domestic media rights income.

Aulas said that teams in the Uefa Champions League and Europa League should be rewarded financially for boosting the country’s Uefa ranking in club competitions, which can lead to more places being granted to a nation for European tournaments.

In calling for a redistribution of domestic rights income so that €50m ($66m) is awarded to teams based on their European exploits, Aulas said: “When you are playing in Europe, in places like Romania and Czech Republic, you have more expenses than revenues.”

He added: “I think it is better to take that amount from the (national) broadcast rights income. The compensation system should take into account the teams that help the (ranking) index score.”
