Benfica claims Portuguese first with VOD platform

Portuguese Primeira Liga football club Benfica has launched its new Benfica Play video-on-demand service through a link-up with OTT platform developer Insys Video Technologies.

Benfica Play will provide fans with exclusive daily content and the club said the service marks a first for Portuguese football.

Content that will be made available on Benfica Play will be different to content shown on in-house pay-television channel BTV and on the official club website. Content will include interviews with current and former players, as well as behind-the-scenes footage from training sessions.

Benfica Play launched yesterday (Thursday) and fans can subscribe through the club website. Subscription costs €1.99 ($2.22) a month for club members and €2.99 for non-members. Six-month subscriptions cost €10.99 for club members and €16.50 for non-members, with an annual package priced at €19.99 for club members and €29.99 for non-members.

Insys cooperated with Portuguese broadcast technology company GTC to implement the new platform, which is available online and on iOS and Android devices.
