Portuguese telco Nos and Benfica have said the latter’s in-house pay-television channel, BTV, will continue to show Primeira Liga top-tier football clubs' games during the 2016-17 season.
In December, Nos acquired rights for matches featuring Benfica in an initial three-season deal from 2016-17 to 2018-19 – an agreement that could be extended to a total of 10 seasons, until the end of the 2025-26 campaign.
Nos, a division of media company SGPS, will pay a total of €400m ($456m) over the next three seasons, with the figure increasing on an annual basis over the period. The deal covers domestic and international rights for Benfica’s home matches and includes distribution rights for BTV.
In a statement, Benfica said BTV retaining the rights to show the games would maintain its “premium character”.
