Carlton looks for Olympics deal with state broadcaster

Sri Lankan terrestrial sports broadcaster the Carlton Sports Network, is aiming to sub-license rights for the London 2012 Olympic Games from the country’s state broadcaster, Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC).

SLRC purchased the rights for the 2010 winter Olympics and the 2012 summer Games via a deal with the Asian Broadcasting Union consortium of free-to-air broadcasters agreed in 2008. SLRC will make a loss on covering the 2012 Olympics due to low advertising projections unless it can sell on some of the rights, according to the Sunday Leader newspaper. SLRC chairman Mohan Samaranayake has said that no decision had been taken on whether to sell on rights to Carlton.

“We hope to reach an agreement on this with Rupavahini soon,” Nishantha Ranathunga, Carlton’s chief executive told the newspaper.
