England’s World Cup opener draws record streams, Netherlands match nets 4.3m on linear

An average audience of 5.8 million people in the United Kingdom watched live linear coverage of the 2022 Fifa World Cup match between England and Iran on the BBC and many more streamed the match on BBC iPlayer, according to overnight ratings.

The ratings show the public-service broadcaster’s linear coverage of the match, which saw England kick off their World Cup campaign with a 6-2 victory, recorded an average audience share of 62.3 per cent and a peak audience of 8.1 million (70 per cent).
