ESPN pulls shutters down on 3D channel

US sports broadcaster ESPN will close its 3D cable-television channel by the end of the year, according to the Reuters news agency.

ESPN 3D launched in 2010 and has presented broadcasts of the Masters golf tournament and college American football games, amongst other events.

The report said that ESPN had decided to close the channel due to 3D technology failing to take off in the home market.

ESPN spokeswoman Katina Arnold said that the broadcaster would continue to experiment with other technologies, including ultra-high definition, for its programming on ESPN and its sister channels.

“We are committing our 3D resources to other products and services that will better serve fans and affiliates,” she said.

Arnold added that ESPN could return to 3D programming “if or when 3D does take off.”
