International sports broadcaster Eurosport will establish a new local channel in Denmark on July 1 after relaunching its Eurosport Player digital service on June 10.
The local sports channel will be called Eurosport Denmark and will replace Canal 8, a general sports channel that was recently acquired by Eurosport parent company Discovery Communications from pan-Nordic pay-television broadcaster C More in Denmark.
Eurosport Denmark will show 2,400 hours of live sports coverage every year, including football and tennis.
“We are committed to investing in our sports business where it makes strategic sense,” Discovery Networks Northern Europe president and managing director Dee Forbes said. “In May we announced the launch of a local Eurosport channel in Norway… [now] we announce the launch of Eurosport Denmark with both being important milestones in building our sports portfolio and presence across the region.”
The new version of Eurosport Player will launch ahead of Eurosport’s coverage of Le Mans 24 Hours, the endurance motor-racing event.
“The new player with intuitive channel navigation, more statistics and highlights and access to multiple camera angles optimises the viewing experience of our growing portfolio of premier sports rights to give fans unrivalled access to sports coverage,” Eurosport chief executive Peter Hutton said.
