The Fox International Channels broadcast division of media company 21st Century Fox is challenging rival pay-television broadcasters Canal Plus and Polsat in the sales process for domestic rights for the Ekstraklasa, the top division of football in Poland, according to the RP news website.
The rights will run for six years, from 2015-16 to 2020-21.
In September, the MP & Silva agency was appointed as the Ekstraklasa’s adviser for domestic and international media-rights sales for the next six-year period.
Canal Plus is the current exclusive rights-holder and shows coverage through the NC Plus platform. Fox currently does not operate in Poland, but could launch a new platform in the country to exploit the rights.
The report added that the rights could be split between more than one platform in the new cycle.
The website said that the rights were expected to be awarded by the end of February, but could now be awarded in May due to the bidders refusing to match the minimum guaranteed fee by MP & Silva for the Ekstraklasa.
