Pay-television broadcaster BT Sport is set to replace rival Sky as the UK rights holder for LaLiga, the top division of Spanish football, according to multiple media reports.
Sky reportedly refused to up its initial offer when the rights tender for the 2015-16 to 2017-18 seasons of LaLiga went to a second round, despite The Daily Mail newspaper stating Sky made a far bigger first-round offer than BT.
The deal follows BT beating Sky to the rights for the Uefa Champions League and Europa League club competitions from 2015-16 to 2017-18.
LaLiga would join the German Bundesliga, Italian Serie A, French Ligue 1, and Portuguese Primeira Liga among BT Sport’s European football line-up, while substantially weakening Sky’s portfolio a year after it launched Sky Sports 5 to showcase its European club football content.
