London organising committee claims broadcast revenue record for Paralympics

The London 2012 Paralympic Games will generate record broadcast income of £10 million (€12.3 million/$16.1 million) for the quadrennial event, according to the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

“Beyond how the commercial value of this package has raised the bar financially for the Paralympic movement, the fantastic broadcast coverage we have agreed will help us take advantage of this opportunity to inspire disabled people of all ages to take up sport and be a catalyst for continued change in public attitudes towards disability,” organising committee chairman Sebastian Coe said.

Agreements have been signed with UK commercial broadcaster Channel 4, Chinese public-service broadcaster CCTV, Brazilian media group Globo, and NHK, Japan’s public-service broadcaster. The European Broadcasting Union, the consortium of public-service broadcasters, is also a rights-holder.

The committee said that further rights deals would be announced before the start of the Paralympic Games, which will take place from August 29 to September 9.
