Movistar TV, the IPTV platform of telecommunications company Telefónica, has acquired the Spanish broadcast rights, excluding the country’s national team, to European qualifiers for the Uefa Euro 2016 and 2018 Fifa World Cup football tournaments.
Movistar TV will broadcast live up to six qualifying matches per kick-off slot as well as comprehensive highlights on each European qualifier matchday.
Movistar TV struck the deal with the CAA Eleven agency, which is operating to sell the rights on behalf of Uefa, European football’s governing body. CAA Eleven launched an invitation to tender for the rights in January.
Guy-Laurent Epstein, marketing director of Uefa Events, said: “We are pleased to have signed an agreement with a dynamic and ambitious broadcaster like Movistar TV. They will provide extensive exposure of the European qualifiers to Spanish viewers, internet and mobile users.”
The live media rights in the country to the Spanish national team’s qualifying matches remain to be sold.
