The International Olympic Committee’s Olympic Channel has entered into a partnership with US filmmaker Frank Marshall and sports content and media company Mandalay Sports Media that will result in the creation of a signature documentary series.
Scheduled to launch in 2017, ‘Five Rings Films’ will feature five hour-long episodes showcasing iconic athletes and record-breaking teams from the modern Olympic era.
Each episode will be directed by a leading name from the global film industry. Peter Berg, whose screen credits include ‘Patriots Day’ and ‘Friday Night Lights’, will direct the first film, which will focus on Cuban boxing legend Teofilo Stevenson.
Marshall, who worked on film franchises such as ‘Jurassic World’ and ‘Indiana Jones’, will executive produce each episode alongside Mike Tollin from MSM.
In addition, MSM executive vice-president Jon Weinbach and Olympic Channel senior commissioning editor Gregory Groggel will both serve as co-executive producers.
The series will also feature athletes who have made an impact beyond sports, including politics, the environment and social justice. Additional subjects will be announced in the coming months.
