Olympics brings record BBC iPlayer figures

The iPlayer internet catch-up service from the BBC attracted record numbers of users during the UK public-service broadcaster’s coverage of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The BBC, the UK rights-holder for the event, said that a record number of 51 million requests from a record 11 million users were generated during the week beginning July 30.

The Games ran from July 27 to August 12.

In August, 22 million requests were received from mobile devices and 17 million from tablet devices, also record monthly figures for the iPlayer. The iPlayer had 196 million programme requests in total during August.

The opening ceremony of the Olympics on July 27 was the most-requested programme in July and August, with 3.9 million requests, followed by the closing ceremony on August 12 with 2.11 million.
