OpenTV launches legal action against NFL

The OpenTV software subsidiary of digital security company Kudelski Group has filed a lawsuit against the NFL in relation to the American football league’s live streaming and related video services.

The patent infringement suit, filed against the league’s NFL Enterprises division, alleges that the NFL has infringed seven US patents owned by OpenTV. The suit identified the NFL’s streaming services and interactive video content as the products that have infringed the patents.

Such services are currently available on the NFL’s website, as well as other NFL platforms, including the league’s NFL Network cable-television channel, NFL RedZone game-day service, NFL Game Pass digital video subscription service, NFL Now online service, NFL Mobile, the NFL mobile application and NFL Fantasy Football platform.

OpenTV has previously launched similar legal action against a number of other streaming video operators. Last year, the company ended a patent suit with Apple over the technology giant’s streaming operations in the US and Europe after coming to a “comprehensive patent licence agreement,” according to the Firececable.com website.

OpenTV has also been involved in patent suits with online streaming service Netflix and internet company Yahoo.
