The European Broadcasting Union’s head of winter and indoor sport is to leave the organisation in the coming weeks, TV Sports Markets understands.
Ingolfur Hannesson, a senior executive at the EBU – the consortium of Europe’s public-service broadcasters – will leave on June 30 and set up his own consultancy business in Geneva. Key EBU staff were informed in January that Hannesson would be leaving this summer.
Hannesson joined the EBU 15 years ago to head up the winter and indoor sports portfolios. Beforehand, Hannesson was director of sport for more than a decade at RÚV, the Icelandic public-service broadcaster.
Hannesson is the second senior member of staff to leave the EBU’s sports division in recent times. Julien Ternisien, the EBU’s former head of summer sports, left the EBU at the end of last year before joining the Infront agency as director of summer sports on May 1.
