Slovak Television granted licence for new sports channel

Slovakian broadcaster Slovak Sport.TV has been granted a licence to operate a second sports channel by the country’s Council for Broadcasting and Retransmission, the national media regulator, according to the Broadband TV News website.

Slovak Sport.TV2 will reportedly launch in a matter of weeks with its most attractive content being the Premier League, with Slovak Sport holding the rights in both Slovakia and the Czech Republic to the top flight of English football.

Slovak Sport.TV2 will be launched in both countries, while Slovak Sport TV, the broadcaster’s first channel, is expected to become a free-to-air service and only be distributed in Slovakia.

UPDATE, 12 July 2013: Article previously referred to Slovak Sport.TV as being owned by public-service broadcaster Slovak Television. Slovak Sport.TV is actually privately owned.
