Sport TV picks up Spanish Liga rights as competition drops out of the market

Portuguese pay-television broadcaster Sport TV has acquired rights to the Spanish Liga, Spain’s top-tier domestic football league, in a three-year deal, from 2012-13 to 2014-15, with the Mediapro agency.

The rights for the league were returned to Mediapro following the failure to meet a payment instalment by local businessman Miguel Pais do Amaral.

Pais do Amaral had acquired the rights in December 2010 for €3 million ($3.7 million) per year. However, his attempt to launch a rival sports channel proved unsuccessful after failing to secure any other major sports rights.

Pais do Amaral in recent weeks had tried and failed to secure a buyer for the rights.
