TVE extends F1 deal, picks up World Cup qualifiers package

Spanish public-service broadcaster TVE has agreed a one-season extension to its rights for the Formula One motor-racing championship, while it has also picked up rights to the remaining 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol).

TVE sublicenses Formula One rights from telco Telefónica. Under the extended agreement, its La 1 channel will broadcast the race and qualifying session of the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona live on May 13-14.

Sports channel Teledeporte will provide one-hour highlights programmes of all remaining races on the evening on which they are run. The 2017 F1 season commences with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 26.

Meanwhile, TVE will also cover the top matches from the latter stages of the Conmebol qualifying tournament for the 2018 World Cup, which will be hosted by Russia.

The final stage will run from March to October with TVE set to cover the clash between Argentina and Chile as its first match on March 23.
