Football: German public-service broadcasters ARD/ZDF acquired the rights for German national team-matches and first-pick matches of the DFB Cup knockout competition in a three-year deal from 2009-10 to 2011-12 with the Deutsche Fussball Bund, the German Football Federation. The deal is thought to be worth about €80m (£64m) a year, of which an average €31m covers the rights for DFB Cup matches. Pay-operator Premiere acquired pay-television rights for the DFB Cup for a four-year period, starting in 2008-09, paying an average €17.5m a year. It will show live coverage of all 63 matches a season, sharing coverage of the top matches with free-to-air public-service channels ARD/ZDF.The combined value of the deals gives the DFB an overall 25-per-cent increase in television revenue on its existing contract with ARD/ZDF, worth an average €78m a season. The deals were agreed without the rights being out on the open market, drawing complaints from commercial broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1 and publishing company Burda Media (page 2).
