John Wylie, chairman of the Australian Sports Commission, the government-funded agency that distributes funding for different national sports federations, has said that sports that struggle to attract exposure via established broadcasters could collaborate to form their own channel.
According to the Australian newspaper, the commission is investigating the feasibility of a “combined broadcasting channel.” The study will take place over the next two months, with a view to launching the channel next year.
“It could be shown on [pay-television operator] Foxtel or it could be shown online via IPTV,” Wylie said. “There are sports that already pay television networks… in order to get shown, so we think the money could be used for [the new channel].”
The commission would be able to provide some financial support for the channel, the report said.
