UK commercial broadcaster ITV this month extended its horse racing portfolio by acquiring rights to the 2017 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe for a nominal fee.
Concurrent auction processes for three UK media rights deals in recent weeks generated strong competition between free-to-air broadcasters, helping each rights-holder to a healthy fee increase.

Racecourse Media Group’s betting rights deal with Satellite Information Services will provide UK racecourses with a significant uplift in rights fees, while also ensuring more of its revenues will be distributed directly to the racecourses.
The new deal with Racing Victoria, the representative body of the state’s four racing clubs, covers domestic and international broadcast rights, plus digital rights.
The thoroughbred racing clubs of Victoria eschewed an immediately lucrative offer for their rights from Sky Racing in favour of launching a new channel with commercial broadcaster Seven.
The coming months will be critical to the fortunes of UK horse racing. Racecourse Media Group, which distributes media rights on behalf of 34 UK racecourses, will agree two major deals, while in the background proposed legislation looks set to shake up the finances of the sport.
