ESPN to trim workforce amidst rising rights fees – report

US sports broadcaster ESPN has confirmed it is to become the latest Walt Disney-owned company to reduce the size of its workforce, according to the Fox Business website.

The layoffs at ESPN will cover less than 400 positions and will include some that are currently unfilled.

Fox reported that soaring fees for sports rights may have also contributed to the decision by ESPN, as the broadcaster continues to face pressure from increasing prices.

ESPN said in a statement: “We are implementing changes across the company to enhance our continued growth while smartly managing costs. While difficult, we are confident that it will make us more competitive, innovative and productive.”

Media and entertainment giant Disney additionally laid off around 300 people last month, both at its film studio and as a result of shutting down the LucasArts game studio, following its purchase of George Lucas’ film company.
