Pan-European broadcaster Eurosport acquired rights in Germany for two games at the 2012 Algarve Cup women’s national team football tournament in Portugal.
Under the deal, which was struck directly with the organisers of the annual competition, Eurosport will broadcast Germany’s game against Sweden on Monday, March 5, and the final of the tournament on Wednesday, March 7.
Eurosport has carried action from the annual competition in previous years, but it was reported on Monday that the broadcaster had been unable to agree a rights fee for this year’s event. German news agency DPA said the deal had been struck after “intensive negotiations.”
The agreement will be welcomed in Germany where Theo Zwanziger, the president of the country’s football federation, the Deutscher Fussball-Bund, said earlier this week that he was disappointed a deal had not been done to show the tournament on domestic television.
The Algarve Cup started on Tuesday (February 28).
