Flamengo has become the latest Campeonato Brasileiro Série A club to formally accept the broadcast rights offer submitted by media company Globo, but has elected to retain internet rights to its games.
Globo will continue as Flamengo’s pay-television and free-to-air rights-holder for the six seasons from 2019 to 2024.
However, chief executive Fred Luz told Brazilian newspaper Lance! that Flamengo will seek to exploit its internet rights in-house. He added: “Some assets that were previously owned by Globo are unlocked in this contract. But this is from 2019. We now have three years to learn how to sell them.”
With the addition of Flamengo, Globo now has Brazil’s three most widely supported clubs in its portfolio following earlier agreements with Sao Paulo and Corinthians. Globo is facing competition for club contracts from sports broadcaster Esporte Interativo.
