France to get Olympics in 3D

French public-service broadcaster France Télévisions will launch a 3D television channel to cover the London 2012 Olympic Games, according to Le Parisien.

The newspaper said the broadcaster plans to provide dozens of hours of coverage in 3D throughout the Games, with a particular focus on athletics, basketball and diving events.

London 2012 will be the first Olympics broadcast in 3D. Olympic Broadcasting Services, the International Olympic Committee’s host broadcaster for the Games, will produce more than 200 hours of 3D coverage using production technologies from television manufacturer Panasonic, a worldwide partner of the Olympics.

US network NBC and UK public-service broadcaster the BBC have also committed to showing some of the Games in 3D.

There were at least 350,000 3D televisions in France by the end of September 2011. France Télévisions showed 3D sports coverage of the French Open tennis grand slam in 2009.

The public-service broadcaster is sharing coverage of the 2012 Olympics with commercial broadcaster TF1.
