Claro Sports, the broadcaster owned by Carlos Slim’s Mexican telecoms giant América Móvil, is to offer free content from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on YouTube through its editorial tie-up with Spanish media group Marca.
The Marca Claro YouTube channel is to broadcast content to 17 countries across Latin America.
Marca Claro said that it would offer a “wide range of content for its audience, including the competitions, real life stories, interviews with athletes and the most dramatic moments of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics”.
América Móvil has been the Olympics rights-holder in Latin America and its current agreement for exclusive pay-TV and digital rights runs from 2018 to 2024. Claro Sports and Marca entered into a content alliance at the start of 2017 and with the aim of becoming the regional reference point for sports news.
The 17 countries in which the YouTube content will be available are: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.
Marca Claro’s YouTube channel currently boasts 538,000 subscribers. Content streamed on the platform include Leon and Pachuca’s home Liga MX games, plus highlights from Mexican football’s top flight.
At the start of the year, the International Olympic Committee’s Olympic Channel agreed a distribution partnership with Claro Sports, leading to the creation of a linear and digital Olympic Channel offering from Claro Sports and Marca.
Ahead of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, América Móvil signed a deal with Facebook to allow the social media platform to stream four hours per day from the event, along with highlights.
