Ahead of Major League Soccer’s MLS Cup on Saturday between Los Angeles FC and the Philadelphia Union, league commissioner Don Garber said he is not pressuring Merritt Paulson to sell the Portland Timbers, and added he expects to finalize plans for the league's 30th franchise by mid-2023.

Paulson’s Portland Thorns of the National Women’s Soccer League were one of the teams at the center of an independent investigation’s findings of systemic abuse in women’s soccer in the United States. Paulson stepped down as CEO but remains the owner of the clubs after firing president of soccer Gavin Wilkinson and president of business Mike Golub.
