American football’s NFL is to launch a new online service called NFL Now that will allow fans to tailor content, including highlights of games, to focus on their favourite teams and players.
The service, which will launch ahead of the 2014-15 NFL season, will be available through online, mobile, tablet and internet-connected television platforms.
The league said that NFL Now would be available in the US through the Verizon Communications telecommunications service, Microsoft's XBox One games console, the Yahoo! Sports website. Other distribution partners will be announced in the future.
NFL Now, which will not offer live games, will stream live coverage of league and team press conferences and the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame induction weekend. The service will provide original content produced by the NFL and individual teams and will offer a separate subscription option, NFL Now Plus, to access the league’s wider library of content.
A monthly subscription fee for NFL Now Plus has yet to be announced.
Male grooming company Gillette, a commercial partner, will sponsor NFL Now programming. Other sponsors are set to be unveiled before the service launches.
“NFL Now gives us the opportunity to utilise the one-to-one digital relationship to deliver our fans the most relevant content to them at the times and on the devices where they want to consume it,” the league’s executive vice-president of media, Brian Rolapp, said.
