Norwegian public-service broadcaster NRK acquired the rights for 10 matches from the Uefa Euro 2012 football tournament through a sub-licensing deal with pan-Nordic pay-television broadcaster Canal Plus.
NRK’s rights cover seven group stage matches, two quarter-finals and one semi-final.
Canal Plus sublicensed the rights to NRK at least in part because it does not have a free-to-air channel in Norway, and so cannot fulfil exposure requirements from Uefa, the rights-holder. The pay-television broadcaster has also sublicensed 11 matches from the tournament to commercial broadcaster TV2.
Canal Plus launched a basic-tier channel in Norway – Canal 9 – in November, but the channel has a limited penetration at present.
