Sky and ITV set to buy into new 24-hour UK esports channel

UK pay-television broadcaster Sky and commercial broadcaster ITV are set to acquire minority stakes in a new 24-hour UK channel dedicated to esports.

Ginx eSports TV will launch in the sports section of Sky’s electronic programme guide, according to the Guardian newspaper.

The channel will show competitive gaming tournaments such as Turner’s ELeague and the Face It eSports Championship Series, with the London leg of the latter taking place later this month.

Ginx eSports TV will base its broadcasts from its new studio in King’s Cross, London.

“Ginx eSports TV aims to add significant mainstream TV exposure to the fast growing esports ecosystem,” Ginx TV chief executive Michiel Bakker said. “I am also delighted about the prospect of Sky and ITV joining our roster. It goes without saying that the combined media footprint and expertise of both presents a significant opportunity for us to make a bigger impact, faster.”

The shareholdings that are set to be acquired by the broadcasters have not been disclosed.
