Sport1 has extended a sublicensing deal with pay-television broadcaster Sky Deutschland that will allow the German commercial broadcaster to offer free highlights of the 2. Bundesliga during the 2020-21 season.
Sport1 will broadcast highlights of all matches from the country’s second-tier domestic football league in the upcoming season, in parallel with Sky’s free-to-view Sky Sport News channel.
Highlights shows will air on Fridays at 10pm (CET) and Sundays at 7.30pm.
Sky currently holds the 2. Bundesliga highlights rights in a four-season deal with the German Football League (DFL), running from 2017-18 to 2020-21. It has sublicensed the rights to Sport1 is each of the last three seasons.
Earlier this year, the DFL tendered its domestic rights for the 2021-22 to 2023-24 cycle. Sport1 was awarded non-exclusive live rights to 33 matches per season from the 2. Bundesliga, and also acquired highlights clips for both the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga.
Last week, Sky renewed its distribution deal with Berlin-based digital platform OneFootball that allows the latter to offer Sky’s live German football coverage to its users on a pay-per-view basis.
The new agreement covering the 2020-21 season will allow OneFootball users to continue to watch Sky’s coverage from the second-tier 2. Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal knockout club competition.
